 fyi, my setup for testing r.sun will now be:

 #spearfish
 g.region -d
 r.surf.volcano out=gauss method=gaussian
 DAY=180
 r.sun '-s'   # shading calc ON
 }}}


 it is much easier with a standardized hill which is simple enough that you
 can intuitively understand the result.
