 ah, yes. I'd forgotten about that.


 so if X11 hasn't been started yet by anything, opening a XDRIVER X-window
 with d.mon will automatically start x11.app.

 When x11.app first starts it opens a xterm.
 Does x11.app close again once all x11-windows are closed or does it stay
 resident?

 I always find the auto-xterm thing annoying and not what I want, so
 whenever I've installed grass or Fink on a Mac pretty much the first thing
 I do is
 {{{
 sudo su
 cd /etc/X11/xinit
 chmod u+w xinitrc
 vi xinitrc
 }}}

 and comment out the "xterm &"

 i.e. this behavior likely has little to do with GRASS.
