 Except that I can't develop this yet since no one has yet worked out how
 to get Cairo for Mac working with GRASS.

 Adding more output formats is easy at the moment, although it doesn't
 offer the kind of quality that you're talking about. This is also
 something to consider for a cartography module for the GUI.
