 Sorry, I did it in a hurry, I was meaning :

 "0 0 moveto[[BR]]
 <width> 0 lineto[[BR]]
 <width> <height> lineto[[BR]]
 0 <height> lineto[[BR]]
 closepath[[BR]]
 .5 setgray[[BR]]
 fill"[[BR]]

 In this example it will draw a gray background on the map extent.
