 as grass65 and trunk are currently in sync and apparently functional I
 wouldn't expect too many problems by bringing the third branch in line
 with the other two.

 my vote:  this has to happen, so go for it. get the infrastructure
 functions solid first, and only then worry about sweeping up the little
 glitches. otherwise we spend all out time patching cracks caused by the
 old incomplete version.

 (and of course we should port that #define to the dev branches too)
