For some reasons
- it is not silently but the advertised default
- GDAL has GeoTIFF as default; OGR the SHAPE format
- GeoTIFF and SHAPE are the most common formats in the GIS world
- no default means extra work for the user
- it worked fine for 10+ years, why not in the 11th year?
