 Hi Pierre,

 could you try to make an artificial Gaussian surface using r.surf.volcano
 as described in ticket #498 and/or
 http://grasswiki.osgeo.org/wiki/R.sun#Testing ?

 it helps make the issues obvious.

 do you know of a readily available DEM of the area we could test with?
 (~169E, 73.5S ?)

 draping the sunlight over the DEM in NVIZ can help.

 direct rad only? what's the exact r.sun command line used?

 what happens if you try another custom polar stereographic with +lon_0=170
 as "up"?
 and then +lon_0 as 90E or 90W for "up"? or a custom local tmerc centred on
 your study site?
