 I check on Linux, no problem:

 {{{
 GRASS 7.1.svn (nc_spm_08_grass7):~ > r.mask zipcodes
 All subsequent raster operations will be limited to the MASK area.
 Removing
 or renaming raster map named 'MASK' will restore raster operations to
 normal.
 [Raster MASK present]

 GRASS 7.1.svn (nc_spm_08_grass7):~ > r.mask -r
 Raster MASK removed

 GRASS 7.1.svn (nc_spm_08_grass7):~ > g.version -g
 version=7.1.svn

 Which operating system are you using? And: what is the error?
