tested with today's winGRASS daily:

BZIP2

r.mapcalc expression=checkcompression = elevation at PERMANENT / 2

r.compress -p map=checkcompression at checkbzip2                                   
<checkcompression> is compressed (method 4: BZIP2). Data type: FCELL
