 Just tested this morning with the Mac r72978. It compiles now but still
 creates a solid black output, as before. No errors. Even with --verbose,
 this is all I get for messages:

 Loading raster map <elevation at PERMANENT>...
  100%
 Loading raster map <elevation at PERMANENT>...

 Translating colors from raster map <elevation at PERMANENT>...
  100%
 Vertical exaggeration not given, using calculated value 10
 m.nviz.image complete. File <elevation.ppm> created.
