Dear PSC,

TIB Hannover (german national lib for sci & tech) continues to archive both recent and past scientific videos from OSGeo and especially GRASS GIS. In this vein, the video recordings from the Trento 2002 Meeting are currently ingested. Good news: All footage has been preserved, bad news: the quality is by modern standards pretty poor (RealMedia format).
An example of the video quality is available here (beware: it runs 2hours -> 1.7 Gb !!): http://178.248.245.19/mfc/medialink/6/m6462/Applications_and_techniques.mpg [listen to Helena at 21:00 minutes, Markus at 1:15 hours, etc .etc.]

TIB is capable to publish the Trento 2002 recordings on its AV-portal, including DOIs for each video. However, TIB wants to reconfirm that these low-quality videos actually do have value/significance for the OSGeo/GRASS community (I strongly believe they do). An alternative approach would be to only keep a still image for each video, plus the audio tracks. The decision how the videos should be made available will not influenced by costs, but rather significance of the content.
Since the recordings are pretty long (2 hours) and cover mutliple presentations within a session, it could be a challenge to determine a "fitting" still frame. DOI-links, as they are enabled via the TIB AV-portal (using DOI plus "media fragment identifiers" MFIDs) are a great way to cite or refer smaller outtakes of these lengthy recordings, like individual presentations or specific quotes.

Your feedback would be much appreciated.

Best,
Peter
