[STATSGRASS] Masking

Hi all,

Is there a way in R to "mask" off areas of a region from being included
in a statistical analysis? I am presently looking at location data from
an obligate aquatic, coastal animal. I use GRASS 5.4 and R 2.0.0.
Contours/densities from kde2d.G include, or cross over, areas of land
that the animals cannot occupy.  Any help or direction would be
appreciated.
