Your version of R is very old, and I guess that is the problem. The
actual version of R is 2.13.1 and the actual version of spgrass6 is 0.7-4.

Could you please update (or ask you system admin) to update, as I
guess that the problem is an incompatiility between spgrass6 and R.

Please compare: the command system() takes in the actuial version the
following parameter, and I assume that it did not include
ignore.stdout in your version - so updating is the only version.

 system(command, intern = FALSE,
            ignore.stdout = FALSE, ignore.stderr = FALSE,
            wait = TRUE, input = NULL, show.output.on.console = TRUE,
            minimized = FALSE, invisible = TRUE)
