UUCP problem with fast modem

using Telebit T3000 modems for uucp:
the modems connect ok between Yosemite's T3000 and a v.32 modem at
Cerl when operated by hand.

but when uucp tries to use them, the time that the modems require to hand
shake is so long that the chat script times out.

I am pretty sure I have isolated it to the chat script rather than
a the modem timing out.

does any one know how to control the wait time for an expected reply
in a chat script?
