	Two thoughts occurred to me reading your letter: what is the size
of your region when viewing your raster file, and have you thought of 
marking your areas as sites instead of polygons?  It is my understanding
of GRASS that any site will be converted to a raster cell,  with no size 
restriction.  And if your region is sufficiently large, you might have
rasterized your areas, but are unable to see them due to the resolution
of your screen.
	The s.menu module will give you the option of rasterizing a site 
file,  etc. 
	One last thing to check:  you did label the vector areas you are
attempting to rasterize, right?  (Not meant as sarcasm, just recalling some
of my own dumb mistakes!)
