I can't address the above, but your last question is right up my alley. :)

Around 300 copies of GRASS (the whole distribution!) were copied from the
moon between 7/92 and 10/92.  I haven't cross-referenced this by
host, but I'd assume that this is not the same people over and over.
    The usage of the FTP server has ramped continuously up since its inception
(almost a year ago).  So, if you want to extrapolate from the period above,
I'd underestimate for 12/91-7/92 and overestimate for 10/92-12/92.

    Look for more data about moon stats and GRASShopper list usage in
upcoming issues of the _GRASSClippings_ magazine/journal.
