                          RESEARCH SCIENTIST III

                          School of Oceanography
                         University of Washington

A group of interdisciplinary scientists in the School of Oceanography, the
Department of Geological Sciences and the College of Forest Resources in
collaboration with Brazilian colleagues are conducting a long-term study of the
biogeochemistry and hydrology of the Amazon River basin as part of the NASA
Earth Observing System (EOS) project. Research involves the synthesis of field
measurements, remote sensing and modeling into a Regional Amazon Model (RAM).

The Research Scientist will provide leadership in our design of advanced
information management and display systems for regional to continental scale
land systems, with particular emphasis on the Amazon. The duties of the
Research Scientist are to:

1. Implement and manage the central data, information, and modeling system
for the RAM. Data sources include within-project generated data (eg, melding
products of image processing with field network data in spatially distributed
models of land surface processes), existing Pathfinder data sets, and other
regional and global data sets. Communication with the EOSDIS must be
developed.

2. Participate in the development of means of visualization of information
products.

3. Assist in the preparation of papers and proposals.

The preferred candidate will have a MS or PhD in Geography or equivalent,
with a strong background in information and computer systems combined with
experience in a relevant aspect of earth sciences. Familiarity with GIS
(emphasizing but not restricted to ArcInfo) in a networked UNIX workstation
and PC environment is essential. Experience in satellite remote sensing
applications (TM, MSS, AVHRR,SSM/I), data base schema design, and development
of graphical user interfaces is desired.

This professional staff position is available starting with the immediate
selection of the best candidate. Salary range is $30,000 - $45,000, depending
