P.MAP legend placement

Hi there!
We've got a problem with the placement of a legend in paintfiles:
according to the manual the legend text that we put in the p.map inputfile
should appear below (beside?) the painted map. It doesn't.
Does anyone know how this is caused and how we can solve it? At the moment
we have to make do with screendumps of d.legend output, which aren't very
pretty...
