-z option r.mfilter ?bug?

	I have a question (possible bug) regarding r.mfilter
command grass4.0.  I tried to use the  "-z" option to apply the 
filter to zero values only.  The resulting map had the same amount
of zero-valued cells, and some of the non-zero cell were altered.
This occurred when I ran r.mfilter interactively as well.  Also,  
setting the filter process sequential or parallel had no effect 
on the zero values -- so the result seems to relate to the "-z"
flag.  The command was run as:

   r.mfilter -z input=site1 output=site2 filter=filter25.fil

where "site1" is a raster map of of tree "site index" values.

I believe I can get around the dificulty by running r.mfilter and 
using r.patch to fill the non-zero cells in the original map with the
map output from r.mfilter.  Any other suggestions or similar experiences
with r.mfilter? I have just suscribed to grassu and grassp -- so if there
