locking iris

That message is common.  What I dot't see is an error message after the line:

>           Problem selecting iris will try once more.

This implies to me that it worked on the second try.  Try using the
monitor at that point.   I usually use the command  "d.erase red"  to 
see if the monitor is responding.  Or use grass.logo.sh for a more interesting
view.
