On the colortable/d.display problem: It could be that your monitor
is in float-mode. Try running   d.colormode fixed   and using
just d.erase and d.rast "filesname" just to test if displays
correctly at all :)

On the LOCATION permission problem, could it be that your
home directories permissions are too tight. I would
say at least 0755 if not 0777 on your home dir since the others will need
access to it. Then the LOCATION dir will need 0777 since they will
be writing into it.

On the RIM issue, "find: cannot chdir to ./home/u5/umhaugh0: Permission denied"
usually means one of those dir is a) too tight on permissions try changing
to 0777 or b) you don't own it or c) both

On the MacX problem, if you're using OpenWin, could it be that the
Mac prefers Motif flavor instead?
