Thoughts on GRASS & x

Regarding GRASS 'maps' and xv images...

If your desired goal is only to improve the appearance of the onscreen
image, xv is a wonderful tool for that. A couple of points to make
  however...

  1. xv has no direct link to GRASS and is not geo-referenced, it is
anly a form of image processor/image display.

  2. The code is available for xv and (I presume) could be rebuild to
actually work with GRASS raster files and thier color tables.

  3. Getting an image from grass to xv involves som form of conversion
right now (i.e. xwd to generate an X-window graphic dump file) and
similar methods to get it back into grass.

The interface to the xv color manipulation capabilities is very nice
(a little small, but very nice) and would provide an easy interface
to colortable manipulation within grass if ported over.

The PBM tools have already made the src.related code, why not some xv
tools... they may even become embedded in the rest of the code.

P.S. - I've successfully compiled xv on suns, cdc, okidata, and dg
workstations so it must be good stuff. Cheers!
