Executables within src/

GRASSuser's;

I downloaded 'fresh' GRASS4.1 source code this weekend, and found what I
thought were 'strange' file permission readings. I followed the instructions
for downloading and decompressing and un-archiving exactly as the README files
stated.

1) The majority of the files and directories were set to "0444" .

2) I had to perform a "chmod -fR +w src*" in order to write the new
code from the updates package into the source code.

3) NOTHING is executable.

Is this the normal way new source code for GRASS4.1 comes? Will I have to
search out by trial and error what HAS to be executable in order to use this
code? I see no mention of this in the GRASS4.1 Installation instructions.

Thanks for clearing up my confusion.
