[]Also, once you convert rgb images to ppm, you can use pnm-plus tools or
[]xv, a public domain image viewer/enhancer.

One thing that all should be aware of is that xv is an 8 bit tool.  Even
if you read in a 24 bit image (which is commonly generated on an SGI), xv
will convert it to 8 bits-colormapped.  When it is saved, you will have
an 8 bit file, not a 24 bit file.
