Problems manipulating imported vector files

I have digitized landuse(etc) on a Data General Avion workstation and need
to transfer the data to an IBM RISC 6000 for analysis.  Importing works using
tar and v.out.ascii/v.in.ascii.  However, when trying to use any vector 
command (v.support works on occassion), I recieve an OUT OF MEMORY message,
or GRAPHICS SET OUT OF MEMORY.

Has any one else out there run into this type of problem?  My files are very
small!  PLEASE HELP!
