where can I get overseas digital data?

Hi!

I want to save myself some grief, if i can, by skipping data development. I
work in South America (Andes) and friends have requested maps of Caribbean
regions and China. Are there ftp sources where I can get topographic, hydro,
city maps, etc. of these areas? Please e-mail me if you know. Thanks!
