     Pgmtops has a -s option that allows you to specify a conversion scale.
For example, to halve the size of your image, you'd use

sparky% ppmtopgm /u/cliff/paint.ppm | pgmtops -s 0.5 | lpr -Pps10 -s

I've used the scale option before (years ago) and I remember that it seemed to
work quite well.
