Eric:
  Misplaced your email address.  The method you described for building
a fake data file for s.in.stf1 to read will be ok.  However, if you
build a replacement for the PL94 file, instead, it will only have to
have about 500 characters per record, rather than 9000!
  The main requirement is that the first four characters be "PL94"
and that the lat/lon info be formatted properly and in the right
columns (same columns as in stf1 tape records).  Other than that
you can put info just about anywhere in the record, I think.
