Importing GIF format into GRASS

Hello Grassusers,

     I know this question has probably been asked and I have
looked in the recent archives, but have not found the answer
to how to import GIF data files.

	  I did get the r.in.gif and compiled it but there was
no directions on where to put the data files.  I have
tried to give the path name and it seems to find the file
but I get a blank screen with no pictures!

      Can anyone help me?
