System corruption during compilation

   Hi Netters:

   During the compilation of related programs, I received the not too umcommon
   message, "operation aborted" from gmake. I figured that it was a matter of
   permissions an tried to SU. However, the system wouldn't let me log in be-
   cause after prompting fort the password, it continued immediately giving me
   no chance to enter anything. It took us a couple of hours to circumvent this
   situation and as of what we know now, the passwd program must be corrupted.

   This happened on a Sun IPX with SunOS and all system programs on the local
   hard disk. I wonder whether anybody else has ever experienced something like
   that (with or without compiling GRASS). It could be just a coincidence that
   this happened during the compilation, but then I just want to make sure...
