mapgen + Linux

Anyone tried to compile mapgen under Linux (0.99.12) ? I did, but
run into several Problems, 
     - no troff support
     - mapdef dies with "Floating point exception. Core dumped", same
       does xzoom
     - no documentation (I have th Young Minds Grass 4.0 CD)

All suggestions are welcome. I will post a summary!
