HELP xgrass entry menu

Hello!
We have successful compiled Grass4.1 and XGrass4.1.
Now we try to learn more about Grass with the spearfish
and imagery database.
The first Step's with grass4.1 are OK but xgrass4.1 does not 
go through the entry menu.
When we start xgrass4.1 the right database (our) is displayed,
but there is no spearfish location and PERMANENT (or any other)
Mapset available.
When we try to create them following message is displayed:
Our entry:
database:/usr/lpp/grassinstall/grass.data
location:spearfish
mapset:PERMANENT (or practice)
displayed message:
mkdir: 0652-358 Cannot create /usr/lpp/grassinstall/grass.data//PERMANENT.

The menu accept no location or mapset.
