m.dem.extract

Hello,
  I am a new user and am trying to extract DEM data from a file.  I am 
using m.dem.extract.  I am able to get as far as receiving the header 
info. but then get an error message: "could not find data in correct 
file."  
  When I cat the file the data seems to be there. The data originated 
from a USGS 1/2in tape, it was downloaded onto a Prime, then ftp'd to 
a UNIX box, then fetched to a Quadra, then back to the UNIX, then 
copied to my directory.
  Any suggestions?    THANKS
