Setting monitor for d.mon

This afternoon I successfully installed Grass 4.1 binaries on Linux.
Modules function properly (so far) except one MINOR detail... I can
not set my monitor to display images. When I use d.mon I get messages
that my selected monitor does not exist. I have edited the monitorcap
file to reflect proper paths to fifo files (which are all 0 length...
is there something I need to do there?). It may also be my driver.
I tried printing out the 550+ pages of the manual, but our printer
choked on it after 6 pages! Any help... just pointers... would be
most appreciated as I'd like to get the install complete by Monday.
