3d views of elevation data

Most of the images I put on our WWW server were made using SG3d on an 
IRIS Indigo or Personal Iris.  SG3d lets us adjust shading (lighting)
interactively to get the best lighting angle, as well as allowing 
interactive viewer positioning.  You can get similar results using the
scripts you mentioned, and then using the resulting map as the color
overlay in d.3d, but you won't get all the lighting highlights.
