v.extract,v.reclass

I'm looking for advice on how to selectively display selected areas of vector
layers.  I tried using v.extract (a contrib, mind you) with a list of desired
areas to include in a new vector map, but it dumped core.  I tried using
v.reclass, but the remaining areas remained part of the output vector, and
were simply untagged.  

I also was unable to find an approach that would use the facilities of p.map
or ps.map.

I'd welcome a few suggestions on the matter.
