HP 712 use with grass

HP Users.  A novice needs your advice.

My computer science director wants to know, before we look into buying an HP 
or other platform for running GRASS:

1.  Does the new 712 series work for GRASS, in terms of graphical display, 
speed, etc (etiher speed, 60Mhz and 80Mhz)?

2.  The university currently runs HP720 but it's full and can't hold the 
storage and the CPU is overbooked.

(While we wait for the new machines, is it time worthy to download and 
compile GRASS on an empty Quadra using A/UX (the alternative is to wait for 
new machines, months, or buy an Apple version).
