v.digit

I am a new GRASS user based in the archaeology department of Reading
University. We have recently installed Grass4.0 on the network here and
everthing has been working fine.

Until I tried to use the v.digit command.

The response I got after naming a new file was 
       
      could not lock digitiser
      check existence of /usr/gis/locks
   
Could someone please tell me what this means or what exactly is the
problem and what I can do about it?
 
I am the only person on campus at present using GRASS so I have nowhere
else to turn for help.
