a trivial display question

I have an unimportant but to me mystifying question.  Why, while r.mapcalc is
EXECUTING a map, do the 0%  2%  4% etc. numbers usually come out in the same 
place, one replacing the next, but suddenly (for no reason that I can see) come
out NEXT TO each other, so that the whole screen fills up with numbers and
% signs?  Have other people seen this?
