v.digit, v.patch

What effect does setting your trim factor as a negative number
have.  For example, I have a script program that invokes a v.trim
as follows:

	v.trim input=infile output=outfile factor=-0.0001

This program works fine and trims my spurs like I want.  However,
when I type in command line mode it does nothing to my file.

Does anyone have any ideas why there is a difference in these two
similar methods?
