Grass&Solaris:Solution????

FWIW, I've found gcc to be a much better compiler than products
produced by SunSoft.  It doesn't take more than one or two
instances of
   bang head against terminal for days looking for bug;
   break down and ask comp.lang.c or similar gurus for help;
only to hear
   oh, looks like you've found bug #n in Sun's cc. Use gcc instead.
This was more true before cc was unbundled.

also FWIW, I've also seen binary distributions of gcc.

agreed. The alpha machine is a prime example.
