another d.mon question

I've compiled grass and xgrass 4.1 and I'm having trouble displaying
images.  We re running SunOS 4.1.3 and X-Windows.  xgrass comes up
fine, but when I try to display a raster image, I get an error message
asking me to run d.mon.  When I do that, I get error messages to the
effect that certain environment variable are not set, the ones set in
XGIS.sh.  Any suggestions?
