installin grass

hi there,
my thanks to all who helped me find and download the grass source files as well
as hints about compiling the source files.
well... i did it
and i can get grass to start up , but i cant run the monitor
that is when i issue "d.mon start=x0" i get an unknow display, and according
to "d.mon -l" there are no available monitors. i have modified monitorcap
by uncommenting the first option (x0 with XDRIVER) ...
any suggestions?
