Using G_scan_northing

Hello,

This message is suited for the programmers list, but I wanted
to reach all you users/programmers like me who do not read the
programmers list as frequently as the users list.

I am writing a GRASS program which must convert latlon sites
to UTM.  I am trying to use G_scan_easting and G_scan_northing
to convert strings of the format 41:29:22.343N and 071:29:34.565W
to double UTM coordinates.  But for my northing and eastings, I   
keep getting 41.000000 and 71.000000.  Does anyone know what I
am doing wrong, or how I am misinterpretting G_scan_northing?
