labelling contours in ps.map

Hi,
I am producing hardcopy output of three contour maps that are vector 
files which were converted from dxf. I would like to add values to these 
conductvity contours. While running ps.map, I am prompted for a labels 
file but I haven't created any. Has anyone had experience in creating these 
label files and will this allow me to label the contours contained in 
my vector map?
