displaying different map projections (not coord-systems)

Hi,
    I need to get GRASS to display map data (raster &/or vector) in different
projections (like gnomic,conic etc) while still refering to positions on the
map using lat/long coordinates.  
    To me, it looks like v.proj is for converting data from one coordinate
system to another (like lat/long to state-plane), rather than for selecting
which projection we want the view the map as - Am I right?
    Have anyone ideas?
