Boy - I haven't run GRASS for a couple of years now, but I remember 
seeing this message when we created data on a system that was big endian 
and then attempted to read that file on a little endian machine (or vice 
versa). Because the bits are now backwards you system is attempting to 
allocate some outragoues amount of memory.

Not a GRASS guru - just my thoughts.
