Bill,
        Although I have not done this... it seems as though this could
be accomplished in r.mapcalc. A slope map could be generated, and surface
area for each cell could be calculated based upon slope and cell resolution...
I haven't worked out the particular's but... Hey it's my shot from the hip...:)
