How m.dem.extract works

I used m.dem.extract to import a 1:24K USGS DEM into GRASS.  Much to my 
surprise, the command used my current region settings to create the cellhd
file for this DEM rather than the UTM settings in the DEM.  Is this the way
m.dem.extract is suppose to work?  I was hoping to be able to reset the region
to the area covered by the DEM using g.region raster='dem.cellfile'.
