Does r.combine have limit in layer name?

Hello,

I am using GRASS 4.1, and was wondering if the r.combine program 
has a limit in the number of characters that can be used to 
make up a layer name.   I am getting the following errors:

GRASS 4.1 indianclone /home/pasture/q/sears/tmp [ 98 ] >> r.combine

FLAG: Set the following flag?
    Use symbols (instead of graphics)?(y/n) [n] y

Analyses will be displayed with symbols during execution
